Team Nigeria to the ongoing African Junior Tennis Championship in Togo recorded another set of remarkable wins in the day two of the tournament.
The Coaches Ubale Mohammed and Abel Ubiebi-tutored side racked up impressive wins in their bid to show their class again in the West and Central Africa region with only one Nigerian experiencing a defeat.
Oyinlomo Quadri continued from where she left off in 2016 as she brushed Hanah Minet from Cote d'Ivoire aside with a 6-1,6-1 victory while Marylove Edward had to wait until the final set before seeing off Kouma Niangadov of Mali in an entertaining 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 encounter.
Oyinlomo Quadri began her title defense in grand style.
In other matches, Omolayo Bamidele won 6-0,6-1 against a Togolese opponent; David Dawariye was responsible for the scalp of another home player, Paul Padio, 6-0, 6-1 just as Rebecca Peters beat Marie H of Burkina Faso, 6-0,6-0.
Micheal Ayoola of Nigeria dealt Vence Ntcha of Benin Republic a serious blow with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat and Abuja-based Saminu Abubakar kept Nigeria’s winning run intact with another 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Cedric Falalou of Togo.
The only Nigerian to lose a match on day two of the tournament was newcomer, Wilson Igbinovia, who made a winning start at the AJC.
His 6-1, 6-2 loss to J. Alipoe of Togo brought great relief of the home fans who witnessed series of defeats of their players, especially in the hands of Nigerian stars.
Action continues today at the Annual Championship as Nigeria will hope to consolidate on previous wins to retain the title they won in 2016.
