Action Returns For Senior Tennis Players As Vemp Open Debuts In Abuja

Senior tennis players in Nigerian will return to top class tennis action when the Vemp Senior Open Tennis Championships debuts at the Package B of the National Stadium, Abuja from 1-8 September.

Nigerian Tennis Live gathered that the tournament, which is expected to attract about 250 players  from all parts of Nigeria, will see participants compete in Men and Women’s Singles as well as Men and Women’s.

Tournament Administrator, Maryam Akande disclosed that the tournament is being bankrolled by Nigeria Tennis Federation President Ifedayo Akindoju.

Abdulmumin Babalola is one of the top players expected to play at the Vemp Open Championship in Abuja.
The total prize money for the men is put at N 2.56million while the ladies will pocket about N1.94million.

There will be two days of qualifiers for men which is in a round of 64 while that of women will be round of 32 with ITF bronze-badge referee, Saidu Musa as tournament Supervisor.

The main draw for men and women is 32 while the men’s double will also be a round of 32 draw. The women’s double will be a round of 16.

While reacting to the latest development, Thomas Otu lauded the organisers of the tournament, saying: "This is what we have been clamouring for, and I hope more tournaments will be in the tennis calendar."

Akande, the scribe of the NTF urged the players to take advantage of the tournament which she stressed will keep them in shape for the forthcoming Lagos Open Tennis Championship (formerly known as Governor’s Cup) coming up in late September.
